*Community Arts: New Orleans* Summer 2010 Problem: Following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans is still in need of spiritual and economic revival. The arts, a powerful tool for healing and community stimulation, are not being made available in many communities. Response: Reconstruct Art will send teaching artists to the area to organize and lead residents in free, culturally-relevant fine art workshops, including Painting with Music and Symbolic Imagery. The artists will also organize a team of local participants in creating a public mural to beautify a deprived neighborhood and reflect the local community. All Donations will be put forth towards materials needed for workshops. The goal is an estimated: $2,000 - Pencils -Paint -Brushes -Paper -Brown Paper -Gesso -Canvas Every little bit helps! Workshop Details

Painting with Music Students will listen to a range of songs and paint according to the music that they hear. They will then use that surface for another painting expressing music ( portrait, abstract, etc.) Students will learn: How to use a different method to paint the meaning of colors, how to use brushes and take care of them how to use unconventional tools/techniques to create texture		Symbolic Imagery Students will undergo two meditative excercises: Writing Exercise Painting Exercise They will write either a poem or short story having to do with what they wrote in the exercise They will interpret their poem into images that they have created by looking up definitions and brainstorming as a group
